Why We Repeat Songs (And Why Toddlers Actually Love It)

If you’ve ever heard your toddler ask for the same song again and again, you’re not alone.

While repetition might feel tiring to adults, toddlers absolutely love it, and for very good reasons.

Repetition helps children build confidence and understanding.

When toddlers hear the same song multiple times, they begin to recognise what comes next. This predictability helps them feel safe and secure.

They may start to:

  • Anticipate actions

  • Join in with movements

  • Attempt new sounds or words

Each repetition strengthens memory and learning.

Repetition also removes pressure. Instead of trying to process something completely new, children can relax and enjoy participating.

This is why familiar songs often become firm favourites in music classes. Children beam when they recognise the opening notes of a song they know.

In music education for young children, repetition isn’t boring… it’s powerful.

It creates the confidence children need to explore, engage and shine in their own way.
